The mayor of Wasaga Beach has some suggestions for dealing with unsanctioned car rallies.
In a letter to Premier Doug Ford, Nina Bifolchi asks the government to take the lead in increasing penalties and fines.
Bifolchi suggests higher fines for not having licence plates on both the front and back of a vehicle, for loud noise/improper exhaust, and for prohibited nitrous oxide fuel systems.
The mayor’s letter also says vehicle impoundment should be extended from a week to a month or two and she wants street racers from other provinces or countries to be banned from crossing into Ontario.
Many of the people who came for the rally in Wasaga Beach last weekend were apparently from Quebec.
Bifolchi also wants the provincial government to look at giving a municipality the authority to close its borders, with help from the OPP, to turn away anyone who is not a property owner.
The mayor says she hopes these suggestions will prevent unsanctioned events from going from community to community, causing problems.
