The Federal government has announced $2.2 billion to help municipalities generate revenue in the face of Covid-19.
As we move forward to restart the economy, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he’s been speaking with Premiers and local Mayors about a whole range of issues.
Today’s announcement is for municipalities that face a cash crunch due to dried-up revenue from cancelled programming. It will flow through their gas tax funding, which will be made this year via a one-time 2020-2021 payment soon.
“Minister McKenna has sent letters to all of her provincial and territorial counterparts to outline how this accelerated process will work,” he said. “But here’s the bottom line: This is strong support to keep Canadians safe and our communities strong.”
Trudeau says it’s a start and that there’s more to be done.
More work will continue in the future.
I’m giving an update on the work we’re doing with the provinces and territories – and small towns and big cities across the country – as we look at restarting our economies. Watch live for more info: https://t.co/KxXAFBhTBM
